Pilot has partnered with Habitat for Humanity of Southwest Alabama to build a home! Habitat for Humanity is a faith-based organization that builds simple, affordable homes in partnership with people in need.
Because of Habitat’s no-profit, no-interest loans, and because homes are built primarily by volunteers, mortgage payments can be kept reasonable to those unable to obtain conventional financing for a home. Habitat homeowners are required to invest 300-400 hours of "sweat equity", depending on family size, time spent building their own home and homes for other people. In 30 years, Habitat for Humanity has built over 225,000 houses in partnership with over 1 million people in more than 3,000 communities around the world. Habitat for Humanity of Southwest Alabama was founded in 1988 and has built over 200 homes locally.
Habitat for Humanity of Southwest Alabama and Pilot has been awarded the honor of hosting, building and celebrating the 2000th habitat for humanity new house construction built in the state of Alabama in 2012. Construction on this home started in April 12, 2012 and has a completion date by the last week of June. The celebration surrounding this dedication will involve 36 Habitat affiliates from around the state. Not only will we be commemorating the completion of the 2000th house but will also be celebrating the 20 year anniversary of The Alabama Association of Habitat Affiliates.
"Our vision is to rally support from our community on a fundamental level and to foster the relationship building process through our activities such as fundraising events and construction builds throughout the year. We believe that when our supporters have the opportunity to volunteer on our build sites and have a full understanding of our mission that we will have a new generation of donors either of time, personal contributions and the corporations and organizations they belong to." –Sam Gadd, Development Director HFHSWA
Helping with a Habitat build is a rewarding way to help a family in need with a "hand up" not a "hand out". Participants will not only help a family, but will have pride in knowing they’ve helped build, with their own hands, a future for a family in need.
